U.S. citizen Patrick Sawyer became the first victim to die of the deadly Ebola virus on Friday the 25th of July, 2014 in the Nigerian capital of Lagos, having travelled there by plane after attending his sister's funeral in Liberia, after she too died of the disease
Health experts now fear infected air passengers who do not realise they have the virus may spread it around the world because Patrick came in contact with 59 other persons.
Apparently, there was nothing unusual-looking about the Patrick Sawyer on arriving at Heathrow from Lagos.
Yet he was carrying one of the most deadly diseases known to mankind, but it was not oticed by the Nigerian airport officials before departure, nor by attendants on the flight, despite their special training to watch out for feverish passengers.
Health experts say the incubation period of the virus is between two and 21 days, and so the immigration officials did not suspect anything about him and he was allowed into Nigeria.
Reports indicates that the current outbreak rampaging through West Africa, began in a small village in Guinea and since February it has claimed 672 lives, leaving another 1,200 people infected including Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol who became infected while working for charity in liberia.
Health workers, family members or others in close contact with infected people mourners with direct contact with the bodies of deceased victims, hunters in contact with dead animals are all at risk.
