Don't Be a Social Outcast;10 Tips To Improve Your Social Life

2 mins read

Nobody want to be a social outcast, alienated from the warmth derived from supportive relationships of well meaning friends family members which can contribute positively to your mental or emotional and physical health.

Social wellness has been described as our ability to maintain healthy, supportive relationships with other people (at family/group/societal level). And by improving your social health skills, you will be able to make choices that lead to positive interactions and enhance harmony in your personal relationships.

Here are 10 Tips to Improve Your Social Health.

1. Be friendly: If you want friends, be friendly.

2. Listen: Be a good listener so that you can develop a supportive relationship with someone who will also listen and talk to you regularly about your problems.

3. Get out from behind your TV or computer screen. Turn off the TV especially if someone is trying to talk to you. Screens have their place but they will never have the same effect as an expression of interest or a reassuring touch.

Communication is a largely nonverbal experience that requires you to be in direct contact with other people, so don’t neglect your real-world relationships in favor of virtual interaction.

4. Put your phone down: Surfing the internet can be both time consuming and addictive so it’s ok to be unavailable at intervals or a period of time.

5Spend time daily, face-to-face, with people you like. Choose and spend time with friends, neighbors, colleagues, and family members who are upbeat, positive, and interested in you. Avoid those that put you down, take but never give, and make you feel bad

6. Random Act of Kindness: Do something kind for someone without expecting anything in return. Sometimes it’s the smallest thing that can change someone’s life.

7. Say “I love you”: Always tell the people you care about that you love them. Life is short. You will never regret saying it but you may regret not.

8. Do something different and fun: Go out and experience things. Try something new. Pursue activities and people who nurture your needs.

9. Volunteer. Participate in a community volunteer program by doing something that helps others. This will have a beneficial effect on how you feel about yourself. The meaning and purpose you find in helping others will enrich and expand your life. There is no limit to the individual and group volunteer opportunities you can explore

10. Be a joiner. Join networking, social action, conservation, and special interest groups that meet on a regular basis. These groups offer wonderful opportunities for finding people with common interests—people you like being with who are potential friends.

NOTE: The secret of successfully applying the above tips on improving is starting small by taking one step at a time. The next article will focus on how we can manage and improve your mental health.
